How to Install Linux (Dual booting with windows 10)

Hey! I wanted to do a little experiment with my computer recently. I researched a bit what could I do to tweak my computer. I was basically looking for an open source OS. I chose to install Linux I wanted to keep windows 10 there so I had to dual boot my computer. I had a bit of a problem dual booting, but eventually I understood how to do it. I had dual booted it on WIN 10, if you are you WIN 8 then no worries the procedure is the same.

Step One – Find a suitable Linux Distro

You might be wondering he what the hell is a Linux Distro. A Distro means a distribution of Linux, in simple words  is an operating system made from a software collection, which is based upon the Linux kernel. There are many Distros you can find across the internet. In my case I had downloaded Linux Mint (Download link –  Here).

Step Two – Creating a disk partition/ create a boot-able USB flash drive

In this step we will have to see where do we want to store the Linux OS. you can either create a disk partition in you PC, and store Linux on that otherwise you can create a Boot-able USB flash drive which contains Linux. now to create a boot-able Disk or a USB the procedure is the same. You will need to download a software named Universal USB Installer (UUI) (Downlaod Link – Here).

Universal USB Installer Steps

You can see the Installers photo avow. so the first thing you need to do is select the Linux Distro you want to store. and then locate the file of the Disto on your computer and select the particular drive or the USB you want Linux to be in.

Step Three – Going into the system configuration menu

Now for the part where you have to tell the computer to read the the boot-able disk/drive that you have created first. The computer reads the disk where windows is installed first. You simple have to instruct it to read the boot-able device first. In the system configuration window go to the boot page, there you will see that in the option CD-Rom drive is at the first you will have to bring External Device on the first place for the computer to read it before the CD-Rom. After this you just have to enable External Device and restart it will ask you to start Linux Mint.

Step Four – Going back to windows

When the first time I had done this process I had a problem When in the Linux start up window there is an option for the computer ither to start linux mint or to read the disk where windows 10 is installed. so if you ever get stuck on this process just remove the boot-able drive from the computer and restart the computer. The computer will automatically read the windows drive and windows 10 will start up.

Ill cover up about the problem occurring while switching back to windows up in the next post. Until that time you can just remove the access to the boot-able drive to the PC and it will automatically read the drive where windows is stored and the OS will start up.
